The Land
This region has many interesting landforms. However, much of the land is flat, and as you travel east it becomes more hilly.
Letchworth State Park, which is known for its cliffs, is found in this region.
Western New York is nicknamed the “Grand Canyon of the East.”
It is also known as the Lake Plains.
The soil here is very fertile and excellent for growing crops and plants.
Many people in this region live in Buffalo, New York, a major port on Lake Erie.
The Waterways
The waterways of Western New York are very diverse. Buffalo is a major port, so many people live by Lake Erie which is where the port of Buffalo is located.
The Genesee River can be seen in Letchworth State Park.
Niagara Falls connects two of the Great Lakes - Lake Erie and Lake Ontario. It partially separates Canada from New York.
The Niagara River runs into Lake Ontario, which then empties into the Saint Lawrence River. You probably know that all rivers need to empty out somewhere, and the St. Lawrence River empties into the Atlantic Ocean.
